HISTORY OF THE MUSEUM

The museum was legally instituted in 1910, aiming to collect and present historic and artistic records that were kept in the Public Archive of the State. By the time it had only the Natural Historic section, the Ethnographic one, and the section of Historical Antiquities. However, it only was open in 1982, when it had already incorporated its collection with other important ones, such as the Sacra Art and the Pinacotheca of the State. It has been created to be a model for other museums in the state, but its meaning has been changed and extended for the several other received collections.

The building was constructed in an eclectic style to host the Agriculture Secretary of the State in the end of the XIX century, by the time the city was being prepared to become the capital of the state. Later, in 1905, it hosted the Senate of the State, and, later, it was utilized as the General Treasury House of the State. Its architectonic style has been changed very much along the years.

Nowadays its estate has many collections; three of them symbolize important moments in the story of the institution:
· The collection Public Archive of the State (in Portuguese “Coleção Arquivo Público Mineiro”), that is composed by objects from both the pre-historic and the colonial age. The ones from the colonial age are very representative of the Brazilian habits and behavior in the age;

· The Art Sacra Collection (in Portuguese “Coleção de Arte Sacra”, composed by objects form the XVIII and XIX centuries, joined by Geraldo Parreiras;

· The Pinacotheca Collection of the State of Minas Gerais (in Portuguese “Coleção Pinacoteca do Estado de Minas Gerais”), that was started in 1926 and extended in 1971.

Other notable and famous collections in the museum are the collections of sculptures, the one of drawings and the one of furniture.

The Museum offers monitored visits for organized groups by the Educative Action Program (Programa de Ação Educativa do Museu Mineiro), thus, groups like schools and other institutions can explore not only the collections, but also their relations with the cultural patrimony of the state.

THE HOUSE

The house that hosts the Museum integrates the operational system of the Cultural Secretary of the State of Minas Gerais, by the Superintendence of Museums. Its estate is basically consttituted by three collections: The collection Public Archive of the State (in Portuguese “Coleção Arquivo Público Mineiro”), the Art Sacra Collection (in Portuguese “Coleção de Arte Sacra”), and the Pinacotheca Collection of the State of Minas Gerais (in Portuguese “Coleção Pinacoteca do Estado de Minas Gerais”). They have diverse origin, but, on the other hand, they are complementary to each other for documenting the culture of the State of Minas Gerais in different periods and, also for that, in diverse aspects and manifestations.
Besides its permanent expositions, the Museum periodically lends his collections to other institutions, and promotes monitored expositions out of its dependencies. The house also hosts courses, lectures, concerts book and CD launches, generally related to the theme of the museum, working with the local people.

The most interesting thing about the house is that it is also considered part of the estate, for its historic and artistic value. The built with eclectic style, neoclassic elements and great influence of the Italian architectural works, were initially employed to serve as the Agriculture Secretaries’ house, by the end of de XIX century. It has still hosted as a headquarters for the old Senate of the State of Minas Gerais, the “Senadinho”, from 1905 to 1930, and it also served to the General Treasury of the State, later named the General Inspectorship of Finances. And, although its creation has been stated by law in 1910, it has been installed only in 1982.

The Museum still preserves, from its ancient periods, paintings in its halls and saloons, like the ones in the Room of Sessions (in Portuguese “Sala das Sessões”), painted by the artist Alfredo de Lima in 1908. It was declared a preserved area of historical interest by the Institute of Historical and Artistic Patrimony of the State of Minas Gerais, the IEPHA/MG, in 1978. Now, the Museum has its preservation guarantied.
